Good Spirits Fifth & Fed Opens In Victoria Park With Creative Fare And Cocktails

Whether you grew up in the ’60s, or caught up on the culture watching “Mad Men,” step back in time at Good Spirits Fifth & Fed. The new restaurant, located in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale at Fifth Street and Federal Highway, is sure to become a neighborhood staple.

Old School Hospitality of Quarterdeck fame opened Good Spirits early this year, but the restaurant group began envisioning the space when Victoria Park and Flagler Village started to transform in 2012. “The community surrounding Good Spirits needed a restaurant owned and operated by neighbors who are committed to delivering the very best bar and dining experience to each and every guest in a mid-century design-inspired environment that is fun for millennials and familiar for the 40-plus, and plus,” says Frank Zaffere, Old School Hospitality partner.

A retro atmosphere created by intricately detailed light fixtures, modern furniture and colorfully lit spirits bottles add to the ambiance. And the wrap bar is a beauty in and of itself. Order the James Bond-inspired “Golden Eye” made with Absolut Elyx Vodka and Plymouth Gin mixed with Combier Pamplemousse Rose liquor, orange bitters and a lemon twist to get things started.

The Good Spirits

Way In terms of appetizers, there’s nothing traditional here. Executive chef Joseph Parsons from Miami’s Barton G helped design the menu. The “Get Shorty” has become a local favorite with blistered corn-jalapeño-cheddar grits below braised short ribs, topped off with a dainty quail egg and crispy potato. Zaffere recommends the escargot served with a mushroom duxelle and lemon parsley gremolata. “It is, in a word, fantastic,” he says.

What’s also fantastic is the food presentation. Each dish is delicately prepared and almost too pretty to eat.

In addition to soups and salads, the savory entrées are a foodie’s dream. So-Flo Scallops, the grilled hangar steak and pan-seared Havana Mahi with honey lime-mint slaw are worthy contenders. Or, go the sushi route with options that rival any stand-alone sushi joint.

The sushi menu, crafted by corporate executive chef Chang Jin (known locally as Sushi Mike), features an assortment of rolls and sashimi. Spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, avocado and more are combined to create “The Firecracker.” But, Zaffere says, “There is no better choice than our chef’s signature dish, and the dish that gets his name: Mike’s Lobster Monster.” This roll includes tuna, salmon and Tamago, and is topped generously with shrimp and spicy Maine lobster meat.
